Causes Of Metabolic Alkalosis

All diuretic therapies except for the carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.  These diuretics cause a tremendous increase in the concentration of Na+ ions brought into the distal and collecting tubules.  This lead to rapid reabsorption of these sodium ions and creates an enhance hydrogen ion secretion due to the Na+-H+ exchange mechanism. Na+ get reabsorbed and H+ get suddenly excreted.*
Excessive ingestion of alkaline drugs (Rx of gastritis and peptic ulcers)*
Excessive vomiting removes a abnormally high concentration of both H+ and CI.  The loss of these two acids creates the imbalance.*
Excessive secretion of Aldosterone by the adrenal cortex.  This creates abnormally high reabsorption of Na+, which due to the Na+-H+ exchange can cause a mass exodus of H+.*
